OSTOMY/COLOSTOMY CARE

Ostomy Care

Many people living with Urinary, kidney, or digestive diseases have ostomy to create a surgical opening called “ostoma” from the inside of the body to the outside.

There are different types of ostomy;

  • An ileostomy is done on the small intestine, and it bypasses the rectum, colon, and anus.
  • A colostomy involves the colon and bypasses the rectum and the anus.
  • An urostomy involves the urinary system and bypasses the bladder.

A permanent ostomy is one that involves the complete removal of an organ. However, if the organ is healing from infection or surgery, an ostomy can be temporary. Regardless, when an ostomy is placed, there is a new system for how waste exits the body. Perhaps one of the greatest challenges patients face after ostomy surgery is becoming accustomed to the pouching system and other necessary equipment.

Goals of Ostomy Care

The goal of ostomy care is to help patients get used to properly taking care of their ostomy so that they can live a high quality life even after undergoing surgery. When patients are properly taken care of after the surgery, they can live their normal life and take part in everyday activities. However, it is important to follow medical recommendations and advice about caring for an ostomy to avoid complications and other problems.
